Instructions

Preparation List

Here is a preparation list to ensure you have all of the necessary equipment and have an enjoyable experience at the workshop.

  • Flashlight / headlamp (Red light is best for adjustments)
  • Intervalometer (Remote shutter release); Not required but helpful for automation and can be obtained at any camera/online store specific to your camera model.
  • Tripod
  • Fold-out camp chair if desired.
  • Snacks & drinks.
  • Fully charged phone.
  • Phone charger cable and/or portable charger.
  • Extra charged camera batteries.
  • Remove all existing photos off of your SD card; Minimum 32GB but 64GB SD card is preferred.
  • Bring all lenses.
  • Microfiber cloth for cleaning lens.
  • Camera manual for reference if needed.
  • Bug Repellent (Summer months).
  • Boots / Jacket / Warm Layers (year round).
  • Change of clothes/socks/shoes in case you get wet if we setup near water such as a beach, river bank, marsh, or shoreline.

Important

  • DSLR or mirrorless cameras are required. An entry-level DSLR with a kit lens is sufficient for learning the basics.
  • Point-and-shoot or bridge cameras are not compatible with this workshop, as they typically lack the long-exposure capabilities needed for night photography.
  • RSVP will be required when the workshop time is announced via email and the first participants who respond will be enrolled. If the workshop time is not convenient, you can ignore and you’ll be automatically included in the notifications for the next workshop session.
  • When arriving at the specified location, please be mindful of your vehicle headlights and flashlights, as they can disrupt the group’s ability to capture the photos.
  • During the workshop, be considerate and please announce prior to using your headlamp or flashlight. Even a small amount of light will affect the foreground of participant’s captures, so only use them when necessary.
  • If possible, make time for an “aurora nap” earlier in the day to stay energized for the workshop which could involve a fair amount of waiting after instruction, simulation, and preparation.
  • Upon arrival at the location, participants will be greeted and presented with a liability waiver to be signed by the participant.
  • Taxes are included in the cost of the workshop.
