Learn how to locate, experience & photograph the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in & around Lake Huron, Bruce Peninsula, & Georgian Bay in Southern Ontario. The northern nights night photography workshop will be hosted at a designated location during a potential live Aurora Borealis event and is intended for all aspiring aurora photographers of any skill level.
Workshop Course Highlights
- Open to all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned photographers.
- Small group sizes (5-7 participants) to ensure personalized instruction and plenty of one-on-one attention.
- Learn the basics of northern lights forecasting; interpreting real-time space weather data, how to anticipate intensity of an upcoming display, and estimating lead time and preparation.
- Using tools and resources to choose location based on weather conditions and how to anticipate aurora display strength.
- Step-by-step walkthrough of common workflow scenarios for achieving the best results from your northern lights photos.
- Hands-on guidance in long exposure and night/aurora photography techniques.
- Set it and forget it – basic timelapse workflow techniques.
- Basic panoramic techniques for capturing big northern lights displays.
- Choosing the northern lights under varying activity levels and weather conditions.
- Overcoming the challenges of light pollution.
- Adapting exposure settings in response to changing aurora activity.
- “Working the scene”—enhance your shots by identifying compelling foregrounds, compositions, landmarks, and unique elements.
By the end of this workshop, you will have the skills and confidence to capture stunning images of the northern lights, wherever your aurora adventures take you. Minor to moderate northern lights displays are common and are often visible to the naked eye (not all displays are visible without a camera) and can create an awe-inspiring experience.
How It Works
Preliminary: All participants who signup for the workshop will be entered in a queue as multiple workshops will happen each month depending on aurora activity. The queue is limited to 10 participants per month. Workshop participants will receive notifications by email 1-3 days ahead of potential aurora activity.
Tentative: Once aurora postential and weather forecasts look favourable, participants will receive details with aurora forecast and general location by email. Notifications will typically be sent 1 day in advance but occasionally notice may be shorter due to shifting conditions and/or solar storm arrival times.
RSVP: Once a workshop is announced, attendees can decide if they want to attend the workshop or wait for the next one depending on lead time. This method provides flexibility based on the unpredictable nature of the aurora and reduces stress involved as life carries responsibilities. The first 5-7 participants who RSVP will be included in the workshop; total participants will be determined based on location. Attendees who do not attend will automatically be enrolled in the next available workshop – even if it rolls into the next month.
On the day of the workshop, the final manifest of attendees who submitted their RSVP will receive instructions and details of the exact location where the workshop will take place. Participants will receive a location pin on a shared Google map for easy travel. Location will be chosen for weather, lesson planning, safety and night photography potential.
When the Northern Lights Don’t Show
Aurora chasing is unpredictable, and there’s no guarantee of seeing the northern lights. If the lights don’t appear during the workshop, we’ll still cover all the settings, preparations, and techniques with simulation. If the northern lights are not captured during the workshop session or I’m not satisfied with the outcome, attendees will be automatically scheduled to the next available workshop at no cost, until the group successfully photographs the northern lights.
